A production that arrived on the market to reaffirm the sound preferred by the audience and to consolidate Laura León’s name within grupera music was “Laura León Es el premio mayor,” a recording backed by its daily presence on television screens in Mexico and various countries thanks to the telenovela of the same name.
Musically, this album takes Laura León out of her usual tropical style and immerses her in the grupera wave, a movement that at the time was experimenting beyond traditional boundaries. La Tesorito lent her voice to songs whose arrangements included keyboards, electric drums and a bass seduced by the cumbia‑influenced beats of those days.
The album was designed to position the singer as one of the women with the strongest presence among audiences attending massive dances. Although Selena Quintanilla’s figure remained deeply present among the public, there was a need for someone who, with natural charisma, could fill stages and sell out shows.
The methodical and well‑executed promotion of the album made it one of the greatest successes in the career of the artist from Tabasco. Each track is a danceable piece that does not limit itself to a single style; instead, it borrows elements previously explored by other idols, which with Laura León’s voice were updated and perfectly adapted to the taste of those who enjoy dancing from beginning to end.
Most of the songs were written by Miguel Ángel Escalante, Adrián Edelmiro Escalante and Miguel Eduardo Escalante, along with contributions from Tavo Morales, Juan Carlos Gómez, Coco Barcala and even telenovela producer Emilio Larrosa. Each lyric seems tailored to Laura León’s vocal abilities, pushing her timbre to new strength and showcasing her evolution from tropical to grupera.
The promotional singles —“El premio mayor,” “No llores por mí” and “Ríete”— helped the album become one of the most successful in her career. Tracks like “Corazón gastado,” “Amor barato,” “La rosa y la espina” and “Súper hombre” highlight her mastery of cumbia, while “La última noche,” “Tiburón” and “Tango” show her ability to merge tropical roots with grupera intensity.
Released in 1996 under Musiviva in Mexico and Fonovisa in the U.S., the album transitioned from cassette and CD to digital platforms, where it remains accessible today.
